About the Job

Position Overview

This position is for an educator to instruct a supplemental course for our afterschool, college preparation program targeting high school age students from Minneapolis Public Schools. The instructor for the following course will teach Science Exploration and Study Skills to 9th grade students. The class meets on Wednesdays. The instructor must be available from 3:00-6:00 pm Wednesdays from mid-January to May, in addition to office prep hours with a TA.

This position is located at the UMN campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. All UMN employees are expected to follow applicable public health and safety procedures.

Job Responsibilities

Instruction (40%)

  • Teach in a classroom Wednesday evenings at the University of Minnesota, in alignment with the Minneapolis School District calendar (mid-January to May)
  • Monitor student attendance
  • Document student performance

Curriculum and Lesson Plan Development (25%)

  • Revise and/or create curriculum for a high school level Science and study skills course
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans that include differentiated instruction that supports students' individual needs

Assessment, Intervention, and Progress Monitoring (25%)

  • Assess student academic growth
  • Inform TRIO UB staff of student academic and/or social-emotional concerns
  • Problem-solve with TRIO UB staff areas of concern to help inform intervention
  • Complete student evaluations as required by TRIO UB program

Supervision of Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (8%)

  • Supervise one undergraduate teaching assistant
  • Assign duties for the TA to assist with the successful delivery of course

Other (2%)

  • Attend and complete required staff training and occasional staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA degree
  • Experience with direct classroom instruction
  • Experience working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual and/or urban high school students (can be outside a classroom setting)
  • Available for the duration of the Minneapolis Public School 24-25 school year calendar (mid-January to early May)
  • Ability to develop and deliver courses in ways that effectively account for a variety of diverse backgrounds, communities, identities, and abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching Science and Study Skills
  • Experience working w/ English Language Learners
  • Experience working with low-income, and/or students who will be the first in their family to attend college (can be outside a classroom setting)
  • Experience developing and evaluating curriculum
  • Experience evaluating student learning and content retention
  • Experience supervising teaching assistants
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
  • Willingness and flexibility to fulfill other tasks assigned to further TRIO UB program goals
  • Preference is given to individuals who have shared life experiences with TRIO-like populations including low income, first-generation, or overcome significant obstacles in pursuit of higher education

TRIO Upward Bound (TRIO UB) is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education equal educational opportunity program. TRIO UB is a college preparatory program for high school students who come from low-income families and are working towards being a first generation college student. TRIO UB works with students, parents, schools and communities, on a long-term and intensive basis to help generate both individual and systemic change. Services are designed to help participants build the skills needed to succeed in postsecondary education. TRIO UB annually serves 118 Minneapolis Public High School students; this federal grant project has received continuous funding since 1966.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: The salary range for this position is $23 - 25 per hour. Final salary offers are dependent on the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity within the department.

Position Type: Part Time
