Job Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical and regulatory support to generating plants in the Midwest service area (Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky). The primary subject areas for this support will be groundwater and landfill/waste management.

General responsibilities include:

  • Provide regulatory compliance support for generating facilities
  • Provide technical expertise in groundwater and coal combustion residual management

Specific responsibilities may include performing or overseeing work in the following areas:

  • Landfills: permitting, day to day compliance support, siting support, compliance reporting, and closure plan development
  • Groundwater: hydrogeologic investigation, data evaluation, monitoring well siting, modeling, and remediation
  • Preparation/review of environmental reports/calculations related to groundwater compliance and industrial waste landfills

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as subject matter expert for basic technical program and compliance issues and supports company's environmental goals, strategies, programs and processes. With assistance develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental laws and regulations. Ensures that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance. Tracks regulatory changes, legislative activities and industry standards and assists with identifying needed changes to facility's compliance programs. With guidance works with federal, state and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy on various internal/external industry committees and teams
  • Provide regulatory-required and internal environmental reports. Develop assigned environmental training programs
  • With guidance, prepare, submit and negotiate permits and permit renewals with federal, state and local authorities. Communicate permit requirements to facilities. Work with Environmental Professionals and facility personnel to update various facility plans and documents that require knowledge and experience while minimizing impacts to operational activities
  • Supports accomplishment of work unit goals and enhances company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communicating and scheduling of environmental work activities. Supports the department's routine and special projects in order to accomplish business objectives
  • Strives to continually develop and improve job-related, technical knowledge and skill to ensure that department expectations are met

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Desired Qualifications

  • Coursework and/or experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Hydrogeology/geology
    • Regulatory compliance
    • Groundwater investigation and remediation
    • Landfill permitting and operations
    • Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) management (disposal, reuse, etc.)
  • Advanced degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, or related)
  • EIT certification
  • Professional Engineer certification
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
  • Office environment including extensive computer use
  • Occasional work in a power plant or field environment with exposure to all types of weather
  • Occasional mildly-strenuous physical activity (extensive walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs/ladders, etc.)
  • Occasional overtime work
