Staff Skills for Success; Leadership Skills for Success The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics shares a leading role in research and teaching in modern biology at Cornell University. The department has over 30 faculty and is housed in the Biotechnology Building, a state-of-the-art facility with individual laboratories and core research facilities. Faculty members are responsible for teaching over 4,000 students in biology courses each year. The research and teaching interests of the faculty include fundamental, as well as medically relevant, problems in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, population genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, development, and macromolecular structure. This position is responsible for lab operations related to the teaching of BIOMG 2801 Laboratory in Genetics and Genomics. This course is a general introduction to the fundamental principles of research in a genetics laboratory. Topics include CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, mutations, gene transmission, genetic linkage and recombination, interpreting genome browsers, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, and molecular biology techniques. There are approximately 130-170 students per semester during the academic year. Responsibilities include but are not limited to 1) managing preparation, set-up, and clean-up for teaching labs and classes 2) oversight of the day to day activities of the Technician I assistant; 3) managing and maintaining the preparation rooms, lab and classroom space, and equipment 4) maintaining Drosophila and microbial stocks and preparing media for these organisms 5) ensuring that all laboratory materials, protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements 6) establishing, troubleshooting, and documenting protocols for lab experiments 7) Drosophila fly collections 8) assisting of graduate student Teaching Assistants with Drosophila fly collections and 9) maintaining inventory and ordering supplies. This position requires laboratory experience with attention to detail and the ability to adapt procedures and protocols.
