Primary Purpose of Position |
The Department of Social Work and Sociology (SW&S) within the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) invites applications and nominations for the position of Interim Department Chair. The Department Chair is a 12-month position that reports to the Dean of the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences and serves as the chief administrative and academic leader of the department. The Department Chair will be expected to provide visionary leadership of innovative programs with strong educator-researcher emphasis. In addition to the general oversight of the department, they will be responsible for strategic planning; budget development, management and allocation; recruitment and retention of faculty and students; faculty, staff, and student development; management and improvement of curricula; evaluating faculty performance; program assessments and reviews, obtaining and maintaining accreditation; developing external partnerships; interacting with other departments and university leaders to represent the goals of the department. The chairperson must implement strategies to develop research infrastructure, teaching-learning environments and approaches to facilitate service and engagement. Other responsibilities include oversight of course schedules, faculty evaluations and supervision of departmental staff; and providing leadership and vision for the department. The Department Chair is also expected to conduct research in their area of expertise and publish in refereed journals and/or conference proceedings. teaching undergraduate and graduate courses within the Department (reduced teaching load) and serve on departmental, college, and university level committees. The Chairperson is a 12-month tenure-track position that reports to the Dean. |

N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as "R2-High Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve "R1-Very High Research Activity" status. It also holds Carnegie's earned credential in Community Engagement and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (
APLU) Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. With an annual economic impact of $2.4 billion, N.C. A&T plays a vital role as a higher-education economic driver in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad region and across a state that is ranked No. 1 in the nation for the second straight year as "best for business" by the

The Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The College offers the following undergraduate degree programs; Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, the College offers four graduate degree programs including the Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work (
MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and PhD in Social Work. Three additional doctoral programs that have been developed are: Doctor of Nursing Practice (
DNP) and PhD in Applied Psychology. Pending review and approval, a PhD in Sociology is forthcoming. The College is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (
CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The Hairston College capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity.
The Department of Social Work and Sociology offers two baccalaureate degree programs, a bachelor of social work (
BSW) and BA in Sociology. Two graduate degrees are offered jointly with the University of North Carolina Greensboro (
UNCG); (i) the joint masters in social work (
JMSW), and (ii) the joint PhD in social work. Our department boasts a dynamic faculty and numerous opportunities for research.

Minimum Requirements |
Candidates must have a master of social work (from an accredited program) and a
DSW, or Ph.D. in social work or a Ph.D. in a closely related discipline. Candidates are expected to have at least 5 years of academic administrative/leadership experience and an established record of research, publication, and professional accomplishments in social work and/or sociology for appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor. |
