Summary:

Under supervision and following established policies and procedures conducts experiments using in vivo/or in vitro techniques. Performs minor surgery on animals. Operates monitoring equipment; collects and analyzes data using statistical methodology. Reviews literature in the field for informational purposes or to gather data.

Responsibilities:

Calibrates and sets up equipment to be used in monitoring animal response and collecting data during the experiment. Performs minor surgery on research animals as inserting monitoring catheters or isolating suturing and electronically stimulating nerves.

Conducts experiments according to established protocols and research methodology using in vivo techniques such as stimulating various nerves and administering drugs and hormones. Uses in vitro techniques following standard procedures such as conducting clinical assays on blood granulocytes.

Operates monitoring equipment to gather data such as the effect of various drugs on nerves and sophisticated equipment to analyze serum tissue samples etc.

Gathers tabulates graphs develops explanatory charts and analyzes data using statistical methodology. May use computer programming to assist in data analysis.

Reviews literature pertaining to research being conducted in the scientific area of interest for information in order to better understand the research conducted and to gather data. Performs routine laboratory cleaning and maintenance functions as required.

Prepares reagents and/or drugs for use in conducting experiments. Participates in planning research protocols developing research methodologies on providing input for the interpretation of data.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree in the scientific field off the research being conducted.

Requires a working knowledge of statistics computer programming and research methodology.

Requires a professional level of knowledge of the scientific field germane to the research being conducted.

EXPERIENCE:

Three to six months related experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Works in a laboratory environment with possible exposure to human and animal serum chemical reagents animal subjects and radioactive materials. Hazards are minimized with adherence to established safety protocols.
