Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Patient Service Manager selects and modifies menus to conform to the adult and geriatric patient*s diet orders as prescribed by physician and the Brown University Health Diet Manual. Provides meal assistance to all patients on a daily basis to include meal-by-meal selection assembly and service as well as retrieval. Accurately serves food and beverages to patients in accordance with the patient*s diet prescription.

Responsibilities:

Assists patients to make appropriate daily menu selections.
May telephone or visit new admissions to ascertain patient*s dietary preferences and to obtain new menus preferences as patient*s prescribed diet is changed throughout the day.
Prepares assembles and delivers patient meal trays.
Verbally communicates patient concerns with the clinical dietitian i.e. education needs inadequate meal consumption etc.
Processes daily menu labels diet changes transfers discharges and new admissions. Prepares daily meal census form. Maintains adequate supplies of menus forms and supplies to support function. Answers telephones and relays messages accurately. Assists with other clerical duties in Nutrition Office as needed.
Inventories and stocks the pantries on the nursing units with patient food.
Maintains quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established Academic Medical Center and department policies procedures and objectives.
Performs other related duties as required. Performs all essential functions with respect for and in consideration of the age physical condition and cultural needs of patient staff or visitor.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Verbal and written communication skills to convey information that may be somewhat complex and/or to others who may have limited knowledge of the subject in question.
The ability to speak clearly and politely to patients associates and managers when conveying information using correct grammar when speaking and not using slang terms; and targeting the amount style and content of the information to the needs of the receiver.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year related experience preferred or successful completion of Hostess Training Program and Exams
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Acute healthcare Hospital environment. Any potential hazard is minimized or nullified by adherence to established safety procedures and the use of protective clothing and equipment. Working conditions are generally good exposed to normal patient care environment when visiting patients and meeting with other healthcare personnel. Sits stands and walks throughout the day.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of department policies and procedures may be required.

None.
