Position Overview

NOTE: This position is funded through an external grant. Continued employment beyond the fiscal year is contingent upon continued funding.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Academic Advisor is responsible for assisting and encouraging students to remain in post secondary school, graduate, and/or transfer to a four year institution. This position reports to the Director of Student Support Services.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide academic counseling and appropriate resource referrals.
  • Provide academic, financial, career and personal advising, and appropriate resource referrals to low income, first generation and students with disabilities in academic programs of instruction and retention.
  • Encourage students to complete an Associate's Degree (Academic, Vocational) or Vocational Certificate programs.
  • Develop, monitor, and evaluate tutoring programs.
  • Maintain advising and counseling records.
  • Develop an Individual Academic Plan for participants.
  • Conduct study skills and other appropriate workshops.
  • Assist students in the completion of financial aid and admissions forms.
  • Serve campus & community goals with outreach and supportive service.
  • Supervise tutorial programs and workshops.
  • Supervise tutor training.
  • Ability to relate to at-risk students, college instructors, counselors, parents and the community.
  • Recognize the value of student confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Counseling/Guidance or related field.
  • Minimum three years' experience providing counseling and academic advisement to secondary and post-secondary students.
  • Minimum three years' experience working with disadvantaged, racially, and culturally diverse students including students with disabilities.

The employee is frequently required to use their hands to feel or handle objects. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and run. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
